The “cotte” was the petticoat, revealed as ladies raised their skirts for the dance, and echoed in this bowl by waves of curling steel. Also reflected in this beautiful piece is the Chinese craft of paper cutting, a highly skilled practice that sees elaborate shapes created by the careful cutting of colored paper.
